Facts to Know about Concrete Catch Basins

By Daniel Locke

Are you aware that ancient cultures used storm drain catch basins as a rain collection system to store water through dry months? Or, that catch basins also guarded vegetation against stormy seasons? If not, you're not alone, but it's entertaining trivia to know.

Today storm water catch basins aren't involved with irrigation or rain collection. Instead, they shield towns against storm surge that can lead to flooded roadways and property. Areas that don't have storm water drainage systems are often afflicted by severe surging because storm water has nowhere to go.

The aim of public systems is to collect rainfall and draw it into subterranean pipes. Nearly all systems can process around one inch of rain per hour. However, they often become over worked during thunder storms and hurricanes, but are still able to get rid of some amount of storm surge.

Civil engineers design construction plans which must be accepted by city planners. Considerable work goes into developing storm drain structures. Engineers collect information about the construction site to calculate location of system elements and underground pipes.

Usually, engineers work with subsurface utility engineering businesses that utilize specialized technology to construct maps of underground terrain. SUE technology offers a range of benefits since it reveals any equipment buried under the surface.

Most people would be impressed by the way storm water pipes direct thousands gallons of water away from their home and neighborhood. When civil engineers design construction plans for municipal systems they devote a great deal of time studying historical rainfall details. Knowing the pattern of storms helps ensure proper water management practices are established prior to installation.

Lastly, there are circumstances where engineers must draw blueprints for detention ponds. These water storage ponds are generally used in areas that do not have lakes nearby.

Detention ponds are labeled as either wet or dry and are needed to temporarily store excess water. Wet detention ponds perform as a filtering system, while dry ponds are used as a water storage unit.

The Department of Transportation monitors issues and concerns pertaining to storm drain catch basins. Anytime municipal systems are in need of installation, repair, or removal city managers must hire specially trained contractors who are trained in EPA storm water drainage system practices.
