1886 Silver Money Mint Markings, And What These Marks Imply

By Deanna Pike

What mint marks can be found on an 1886 silver money, and exactly what do all of these marks signify? The presence of a perfect marking, or the absence of just about any marking assigning the mint where the coin was created, can tell quite a lot regarding a specific coin. In 1886 there were 3 mints that made silver dollars for at least part of the year. These were the Philadelphia mint, the New Orleans mint, and the San Francisco mint.

If a coin doesn't have any mint mark then this can mean one of two things. Whether the mint which produced the coin didn't make a mark on the coins that were generated or the coin has been so worn that the mint marking is no longer obvious to the naked eye. A competent coin professional can normally determine which situation exists. If the coin has numerous particulars leftover but there is simply no mint marking then the coin was created in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia mint generated 1886 silver buck coins that don't have any mark. These coins are typically present in poor condition so the deficiency of a mint marking may not be apparent because much of the details of the coin really are lost or blurred. The caliber of the minting also plays a role in the coin worth. Coins that have crisp and apparent particulars are worth more than coins that were poorly minted.

The San Francisco mint made coins which have a little letter s as the mint marking. This is located on the rear of the coin and can impact the worth of the silver money. Coins which are in good condition or which are exceptional caliber from the San Francisco mint can be worth much more than a lot of these silver money.

An 1886 silver money which has a small o as the mint marking was manufactured in New Orleans. A few of the coins that this mint made are incredibly valuable if they are in top condition and have never been circulated.
